By registering for and using this service, you agree to these Terms of use (“Terms”). If you do not agree to these Terms, you may not access the content.

Scope of the service

This service provides online access to a scholarly digital edition of materials related to Tove Jansson, including:

  • Transcriptions of manuscript texts
  • Facsimile images of manuscripts and early printed editions of Tove Jansson’s works
  • Scholarly annotations, metadata, and editorial material

The source materials are preserved in several archives, including those of the Åbo Akademi University Library, the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland, and Moomin Characters.

The materials created by Tove Jansson made available through the service are protected by copyright and are published online by permission of Moomin Characters and the rights holders of Tove Jansson.

Copyright and other intellectual property rights

  • Copyright in the original manuscripts and other source materials, as well as in printed works and facsimile images, remains with the respective copyright holders.
  • Rights in the digital edition, including the editorial form of the transcriptions, editorial markup, annotations, metadata, and technical structure, are held by the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland, unless otherwise stated.
  • Copyright in introductory texts, editorial content, and other website texts that are not works by Tove Jansson is held by the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland and the respective editors, unless otherwise stated. Some of this content may be made available under open licences, as indicated in connection with the individual texts.
  • Illustrations and images that are not works by Tove Jansson may be subject to separate copyright or licence terms. Any such terms are indicated in connection with the individual items.
  • Nothing in these Terms of use transfers any copyright or related rights to the user.

Permitted use

Registered users may:

  • Read, view, and consult the texts and images via the service interface
  • Read, study, and explore the materials for personal, educational, and scholarly purposes
  • Quote short passages from the transcriptions where quotation is permitted by law, provided that the source is properly cited
  • Refer to the digital edition in publications, presentations, and teaching materials, in accordance with these Terms and applicable law
  • Perform text and data mining of the materials for scholarly research

All permitted use under these Terms is non-commercial, unless explicitly authorised otherwise.

Prohibited use

Unless prior written permission has been obtained from the copyright holders, users may not:

  • Copy, reproduce, redistribute, or republish complete texts, images, or substantial parts thereof
  • Make the texts or images available on other platforms or services, even for non-commercial purposes
  • Use the materials for commercial purposes
  • Engage in systematic downloading, copying, scraping, or harvesting of content
  • Perform text and data mining of the materials, except for scholarly research
  • Circumvent technical access controls or share login credentials with others

Downloading and copying

Any downloading, copying, or printing functionality provided by the service is intended solely for uses permitted under these Terms of use and applicable copyright law. The availability of such functionality does not imply permission for redistribution, republication, or any other reuse beyond those limits.

Citations and acknowledgements

When quoting or referring to content from this digital edition, users must cite the source in accordance with the citation guidelines provided on the website.

Termination of access

The Society of Swedish Literature in Finland reserves the right to suspend or terminate access to the service in the event of misuse or a violation of these Terms of use.

Changes to the Terms of use

These Terms of use may be updated from time to time. Continued use of the service after any such changes have been published constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms of use.
